Job Description:

Kamehameha Schools is hiring for a Hope Po’o Kumu (Vice Principal) at our Kapalama Campus Middle School. We’re seeking an individual who is able to lift and inspire our kumu (teachers) through strong leadership, academic competence, and effective collaboration and problem solving. This person would serve as a role model to actively perpetuate Hawaiian culture and provide Hawaiian education based curriculum support and innovative design thinking. Strong candidates would be passionate for and committed to improving the well-being of Native Hawaiians and Native Hawaiian communities.

Job Summary

Assists with managing and supervising the daily administrative operations of the school, working closely with the principal, other administrators, faculty and staff to ensure a safe and productive school environment. Under the direction of the school principal, communicates to school professional staff, the design and delivery of all curriculum assessments, programs and related educational program functions for the campus system including the piloting, implementation, alignment, and timing and sequence of program innovation and change. Observes faculty in the classroom and provides feedback to improve classroom instruction. Attends various student and staff functions.

Essential Responsibilities

Leadership, Strategy, and Planning

  • Serves as an instructional leader to enhance effective instruction and high student achievement.
  • Facilitates the implementation of research based and culture-based instructional design and strategies.
  • Supports and communicates effective teaching practices and classroom management strategies.
  • Assists with managing and supervising the daily administrative operations of the school, working closely with the principal, other administrators, faculty and staff to ensure a safe and productive school environment.

Curriculum, Assessment, Instruction System

  • Under the direction of the school principal, communicates to school professional staff, the design and delivery of all curriculum, assessments, programs and related educational program functions for the campus system including the piloting, implementation, alignment, and timing and sequence of program innovation and change.
  • Collaborates and communicates with campus leaders to ensure curriculum change follows a timetable of logical and timely development, sequenced so as not to overload teachers with implementation responsibilities.

Program Delivery and Operational Oversight

  • Oversees and assists in establishing and maintaining an effective learning climate. Leads teacher leadership teams in the development and implementation of a school-wide plan for building and sustaining a positive culture of behavior. Analyzes discipline data and addresses areas of need to maintain and effective learning climate. Conducts parent conferences with appropriate staff and recommends disciplinary action.
  • Plans and develops the master calendar by working collaboratively with appropriate staff to determine activities, special events, class days, and professional development.
  • Ensures that curriculum documents are consistent in format to promote user friendliness for use by classroom teachers.
  • Develops broad implementation and communication plans for all curricular efforts on the campus with all stakeholders.
  • May serve in the role of Principal and oversee other operational functions as needed.

Development and Capacity Building

  • Serves to develop faculty and/or staff effectiveness and competencies through the supervisory process. Participates in monitoring and improving the delivery of service through the mini-observation/feedback process on an on-going basis.
  • Supports principal in ensuring coherent, focused professional development to improve teacher instructional skills and behaviors as measured by improvement in student learning. Coordinates assigned campus professional development, ensuring that it is congruent with campus goals and priorities.
  • Conducts regular, frequent and focused formal and informal observations to include but are not limited to classroom visits and walk-throughs.
  • Promotes among students, faculty and staff, the learning of the Hawaiian language, history, culture and values as an integral part of Kamehameha Schools
Applicant Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 5 years of Pre-K – 12 teaching experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year of teacher leadership, manager or supervisory experience.

    • Leadership skills and experience in education, working with teachers and administrators; knowledge of current best practices in education and learning, supervision, team development.

    • Ability to maintain composure, tact, sensitivity and flexibility during peak periods and crisis intervention situations.
    • High level of integrity to handle the highly confidential information regularly seen and discussed.
  • Management:
    • Strong management and organizational skills – ability to manage multiple functions and priorities in an efficient manner; ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and focus to complete projects.
    • Effective interpersonal skills to establish successful relationships with students, parents, faculty and staff, and community resources and partners.
    • Effective oral and written communications skills to include conference and conflict resolution skills; ability to communicate clearly with a wide audience within the student, parent, community and campus populations.
    • Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and various software applications; familiarity with electronic communications including social media.
    • Analytical skills to review and analyze activities and initiatives such as: cost-benefit analysis, budget projections, academic achievement, etc.
    • Familiarity with basic statistical analysis.
    • Knowledge of child development and behaviors.
    • Team player – work well with others to achieve results; demonstrate respect and tolerance for the ideas of others; ability to incorporate the thinking of individuals in group to reach group consensus.
    • Willing and available to work varied hours, including evening events and occasional travel state-wide and to the continental U.S. as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • School Administration Certification or License.
  • Previous work with diverse learners and communities.
  • Understanding and experience in age appropriate school administration, including previous supervisory experience.
  • Recent age appropriate teaching experience.
  • Knowledge of current trends in curriculum and assessment, student assessment, learning theories, student behavior and other issues at the forefront of education.
  • Strong computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet applications various software, web tools and social media; familiarity with student records system.
  • Knowledge of KS mission, strategic plan, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Hawaiian culture and Christian values.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
  • As needed, on-call status, 24:7, may apply for school related business.
