Job Description:

Supporting and reporting to the Acting Director of Development, the Director of Major Gifts is responsible for cultivating, soliciting and securing outright gifts for Punahou School.  The Development team is one of five branches of the Advancement team, and is comprised of eight staff members responsible for securing gifts at all levels from individuals, private foundations, and corporate giving programs to benefit the mission and vision of Punahou School immediately, and in perpetuity.  The team seeks outright, pledged and planned gifts directed towards current projects and the endowment. Development team members are committed to educating the global Punahou community about the educational priorities of the school and the management and growth of the school’s endowment in order to encourage new and ongoing gifts to the institution.

Philanthropic Programs within the Development team include Annual Giving, Major Giving, Planned Giving, Alumni Giving, Parent Giving, Faculty and Staff Giving, and Foundation, Corporate and Trust Giving.

Work Year: 12 months
Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM.  After work hours, weekends, holidays for special events as needed.

Applicant Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree. Master's Degree preferred. 
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in development with a proven ability to cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts, ideally in a complex, multi-divisional educational institution; a solid track record of securing gifts at the major gifts level ($25K+) from individuals or Foundations.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work successfully with colleagues, donors, faculty, administrators, and volunteers.
  • Competent, ethical professional judgment and accountability for annual programmatic and budget success goals.
  • A high degree of comfort working throughout the U.S. and internationally with cultural sensitivity and an optimistic approach to work, supported by a strong work ethic, attention to detail, an outgoing nature, and a warm personal style.
  • A strong affinity for the institution and ability to champion the school, its educational mission, and its programs among its various constituents.
  • Requires a high level of self-awareness, and a friendly, empathetic and collaborative work style for a complex environment comprised of multiple and diverse constituencies.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and facilitate a range of special events.
  • Must be able to travel periodically to inter-island and regional Alumni and Advancement meetings and conferences.
