2-Day Workshop Description: Industry experts from the National Business Officers Association will give you the latest and most relevant information for your role as an independent school leader or business office professional through a two-day workshop tailored to schools in Hawaii. This dynamic program focuses on providing solutions to pressing issues within independent schools through national resources delivered to you in a local setting. Taught by a diverse group of national thought leaders, and featuring a broad range of business operations topics, the workshop will give you a collection of resources, grasp of current issues and take away actionable items that you can implement the day you get back to school. Sessions will span the areas of accounting/finance, human resources, legal compliance, strategic and financial planning, data insights, working with the board, and more.
Independent school trustees provide foresight, oversight, and insight and should serve as the school’s strongest advocates for its mission. Along with the head of school and chief business officer, board members steer the institution towards a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical, and legal governance and financial management policies. Charged with fiduciary responsibility and liability, the board ensures the school has adequate resources to advance its mission and is utilizing those resources prudently. This session provides trustees and the independent school leaders working closely with them up-to-date information about what it means to serve as a fiduciary of the school, such as understanding and complying with IRS regulations for exempt organizations including executive compensation, what to look for in an annual audit, recommended board committee charges and industry best practices for independent school finance and business operations. NBOA has focused its research on the key issues that impact a school’s financial health in addition to serving as industry experts on the role of a trustee as it relates togovernance and business excellence. This session offers interactive governance case studies as well as highlights several NBOA initiatives to help trustees identify the most relevant information available to fulfill their fiduciary roles and ensure their school’s long-term viability.
Who should attend: This workshop is for Business Officers, Schools Heads, and Trustees/Board Members
Travel Grants Available: A limited number of Scholarships for Neighbor Island Member Schools will be available. They will be needs-based, and no more than 1 will be granted per school. The scholarships are meant to help defray the cost of travel and 1 night hotel stay and are not to exceed $380 per recipient. Reimbursements will be issued at the conclusion of the event, once all receipts are submitted to HAIS. Participants will still be responsible for the cost of the registration fee. The Travel Grant application will be made available soon.
