Institute and Registration Information
This is a 2-day institute designed for teachers, and practicing or aspiring grade level leaders and/or department heads, who want to enhance both their leadership skills and their understanding of quality curriculum as the basis of effective learning.
Facilitating curriculum committees, or developing curriculum, is often part of the role of the teacher leader. Working with teams to make curricular change in a school setting, demands both skills and knowledge. This one-of-a-kind course will help teachers and team leaders hone skills in this vital area. Using actual units of study, case studies, and other practical curriculum tools, participants will develop skills in:
- Analyzing the current state of curriculum in their school
- Determining the essential components of a curriculum that focuses on quality student learning
- Discovering how the teaching and learning cycle relates to curriculum, assessment, and instruction
- Utilizing the steps in developing a quality curriculum
- Developing assessments that reflect student learning of the intended curriculum
- Understanding factors that lead to sustainability of the written curriculum
- Determining strategies for facilitating a curriculum development project in their school
- Supporting teams and enhancing curriculum approaches as a teacher leader

It wasn’t something we ever encountered when we were kids, but suddenly it seemed every child was learning elements of robotics, scientific theories and engineering problem-solving. Teachers/Educators and College/University Students (ONLY), when you have a moment, please register as a primary Entrant by clicking on this hyperlink Olelo-2017YXC Once registered, then you may complete the online Entry Form and Upload & Submit entries by 11:59 p.m. HST on Tuesday, February 28, 2017.
Teachers/Educators, to expedite the submission process, you may provide your students with your OmniContest username and password and have them complete the online Entry Form and Upload & Submit their respective entries.
NOTE: The online process allows for a paperless workflow. Therefore, instead of having to print and sign the entry/cablecast release form, you need only acknowledge understanding of the release prior to submitting each entry. Also, it is important to note that the system will not allow you to submit an entry until it has created a compressed file for streaming and judging.
Just a reminder, you have until 11:59pm HST on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 to submit entries
HOW TO CREATE AN ENTRANT ACCOUNT (Teachers and College Students ONLY):
Step 1: Review competition rules and regulations by clicking on the Rules tab.
Step 2: Click on the Register hyperlink (next to Login Now button), type your email address and press Submit button, and then proceed to completing your Entrant profile. Be sure to save and submit your Entrant form.
HOW TO UPLOAD AND SUBMIT ENTRIES:
Teachers and College students, once your Entrant profile has been successfully set-up, you will then be able to:
Step 3: Create an entry by clicking on the Add Entry button. Fill out the entire entry form once for each entry.
Step 4: Review your entry/entries by clicking on the View Entries button.
Step 5: Submit your entry/entries by returning to the View Entries button. Click on PDF button to generate Online Entry Form that needs to be signed and submitted via email to firstname.lastname@example.org by Friday, March 3, 2017.
NOTE: Teachers/Educators, to assist with uploading and submitting entries, you may provide your Entrant username and password, along with the above instructions (steps 3 - 5), to your students. Your students can then login from their workstations to upload and submit entries.
Professional Learning Community

The Hawai‘i Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) is pleased to announce a Professional Learning Community (PLC) Workshop, which will take place on January 30 (Oahu) and January 31 (Maui) . Professional Learning Communities represent the best organizing process for the 21st Century learner and it is through the PLC framework that, when successfully accomplished, students will reach the highest levels of learning.
The Hawai’i PLC will be run by Dr. Tim Stuart, Executive Director of Strategic Programs at Singapore American School.
Institute and Registration Information:
During the PLC Workshop, participants will learn how to engage students in taking collective responsibility for their own learning by framing the 4 PLC questions around their own experiences:
1. What do I need to know and be able to do?
2. How will I know that I have learned it?
3. What will I do if I am not learning?
4. What will I do if I already know it?
By bringing students into the PLC conversations, schools can increase student agency, create relevant learning experiences, and offer authentic assessment opportunities for students to accelerate their own learning.

The first annual Leading Schools of the Future (LSOTF) Conference will take place April 6-8, 2017 at the Ala Moana Hotel. HAIS Schools Re-Use
The Hawai'i Association of Independent Schools is offering a new program called HAIS Schools Re-Use. This program will allow HAIS Full Member schools to post items that they would like to donate to other schools (ex: ipads, computers, office furniture etc). Any HAIS Member school can then complete an inquiry form, which will go directly to the listing school.
